Banks

Cyprus Development Bank

Cyprus Development Bank, also known as cdbbank, has two business centres, one in Nicosia and one in Limassol. You won’t find a cdbbank branch on every corner. Instead, customers work with Client Relationship Officers who handle all their banking. The bank works with customers in Cyprus and abroad, and its team speaks Greek, English, Arabic, and Russian.

Bank features

  • Personal, business and international banking
  • Euro and foreign-currency accounts
  • cdbbank eBanking
  • Two Cyprus business centres

About Cyprus Development Bank

Cyprus Development Bank was founded in 1963 to help finance Cyprus’s economic development and became the first financial institution on the island to provide project financing. Today, cdbbank is a relatively small, specialised institution, with two business centres and a focus on personal relationships.

Personal customers can use the bank for current accounts, savings, deposits, debit cards and payments. Businesses can get day-to-day accounts, overdrafts, longer-term finance, POS services and trade finance. The bank also works with international and institutional customers, but you do not need to run a company to bank with it.

You can manage your accounts and make payments through cdbbank eBanking. There is no full mobile banking app, so if you are used to doing everything from your phone, keep that in mind. Customers are also assigned a Client Relationship Officer who can help with account changes, applications, and other banking requests.

As for access, Cyprus Development Bank only has locations in Nicosia and Limassol. If you live elsewhere in Cyprus, you will need to travel to one of those cities for branch or counter services.

Business Banking

Cyprus Development Bank works with entrepreneurs, SMEs, larger companies and institutional customers. You can use it for everyday company banking, then add financing, POS services or trade finance if your business needs them.

The Business Current Account can handle incoming customer payments, payroll, supplier payments, and other company expenses. If you accept card payments, you can also connect JCC POS terminals to a current or overdraft account.

Debit Cards

cdbbank issues Mastercard debit cards for personal and business customers. Individuals can choose between Classic and Platinum, while the business card is available as a Platinum Mastercard.

Available cards include:

  • Mastercard Classic Debit for individuals
  • Mastercard Platinum Debit for individuals
  • Mastercard Platinum Debit for businesses

Euro cash withdrawals are free at cdbbank ATMs and other banks’ ATMs in Cyprus and the eurozone. Withdrawals in another currency and card payments involving currency conversion come with additional charges.

Payments and Foreign Exchange

You can make euro and international payments through cdbbank, including instant SEPA transfers and recurring direct debits. The bank also has treasury services for customers who receive, hold, or pay money in different currencies.

Available services include:

  • Internal Transfers
  • SEPA Direct Debits
  • SEPA Instant Transfers
  • Transfers to Local Banks
  • International Transfers
  • Foreign Exchange Trading
  • Forward Exchange Contracts
  • Market Risk Solutions

Forward Exchange Contracts let you agree a fixed exchange rate for a future period rather than using the exchange rate available when the payment eventually takes place. Treasury services are available to personal, corporate and international banking customers.

Business Finance

Cyprus Development Bank provides financing for working capital, property, equipment, business projects, startups and green-energy installations. Companies can also apply for overdrafts when they need short-term access to extra funds.

Available business-finance options include:

  • Medium and long-term business finance
  • Overdraft facilities
  • Business premises loans
  • Green-energy finance
  • Start-up finance
  • Loans to business individuals
  • Project-related finance

The rate, repayment period and security requirements are decided as part of the application. For an overdraft, the bank considers the company’s finances, expected account turnover, available security and the size of the limit requested.

Trade Finance and Merchant Services

If your company trades locally or internationally, cdbbank can handle guarantees, documentary credits, and bills for collection. Businesses that take card payments can also connect JCC POS terminals directly to a cdbbank current or overdraft account.

Available services include:

  • Bank Guarantees
  • Documentary Credits
  • Bills for Collection
  • JCC Merchant Services

You can connect different POS terminals to different accounts, and the card transactions appear through cdbbank eBanking. Money received through the linked POS is then available through the connected cdbbank account.

Wealth Management

cdbbank also provides investment and corporate-finance services through its subsidiary, cdbGlobalCapital. These include custody work as well as advice for companies raising or restructuring capital.

Services include:

  • Custody Services
  • Depositary Services
  • Corporate Finance Consultancy
  • Capital Raising
  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Company Valuations and Capital Structuring

Its custody and depositary work includes safekeeping, cash monitoring, and oversight for investment funds. Consultancy services include project finance, loan syndication, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, company valuations, and the structuring of financial instruments.

Digital Banking

You can manage your accounts through cdbbank eBanking without visiting a business centre. The service covers the main day-to-day tasks, including payments, transfers, and account documents.

Through eBanking, you can:

  • Check account balances and transactions
  • Make payments
  • Transfer money
  • Retrieve electronic statements

Transactions use two-factor authentication and can be approved with either a mobile soft token or a physical hard token. The mobile token is only used for security, so regular account management still takes place through the web-based eBanking service.

Pros and cons

Cyprus Development Bank Pros and Cons

Cyprus Development Bank relies on direct customer contact more than many of the larger retail banks in Cyprus. You get a Client Relationship Officer and access to online banking, but many applications and account changes involve forms, documents, and direct contact with the bank.

Pros

  • Current accounts are available in euros and major foreign currencies.
  • Business eBanking supports bulk payment files and multiple approval levels for company accounts.
  • Customers are assigned a Client Relationship Officer for more direct support.
  • cdbbank eBanking supports local and international transfers, e-statements, future-dated payments and saved beneficiary templates.
  • Mastercard debit cards include free euro cash withdrawals from Mastercard ATMs in Cyprus and the eurozone.
  • International customers can access accounts, payments, deposits, trade finance and foreign exchange.
  • cdb GlobalCapital adds brokerage, asset management and corporate-advisory services alongside the bank’s regular products.

Cons

  • There are only two business centres, in Nicosia and Limassol.
  • There is no full mobile-banking app. The mobile application is used as a security token for web-based eBanking.
  • eBanking access requires a separate application that is processed through your Client Relationship Officer.
  • Full eBanking access and transaction approval require a soft/mobile token or separate hard token for one-time passwords.
  • The bank offers debit cards, but does not currently list a separate credit-card range for personal or business customers.
  • Much of the bank’s application process still relies on direct contact with a Relationship Officer, email or submitted forms rather than self-service digital applications.
  • New personal accounts still use a document-led application process rather than in-app onboarding.

Cyprus Development Bank Current Account

The Current Account is cdbbank’s standard account for day-to-day personal banking. You can have your salary or other income paid into it, use it for bills and transfers, withdraw cash, and keep the account in euros or another major currency.

You can manage it through cdbbank eBanking and add a Mastercard debit card or chequebook. If you need an overdraft, that is available too, but you have to apply for it separately.

Cyprus Development Bank Debit Card Benefits

Cyprus Development Bank’s debit cards come with a few benefits that you would usually expect of a more expensive card.

Both cdbbank Mastercard debit cards include travel insurance and medical cover while you are abroad, provided a qualifying purchase is made with the card. You also get access to a 24/7 claims line with support in Greek, English and Russian.

The Platinum card adds DragonPass membership, which gives you access to a network of more than 1,200 airport lounges worldwide. The membership is free, but lounge visits may still come with a charge for you or your guests.

Both cards also include free euro withdrawals from Mastercard ATMs in Cyprus and the eurozone, which can cut ATM costs when travelling within countries that use the euro.

How to Open a Cyprus Development Bank Account

If you are new to cdbbank, you will need to submit identification and financial documents before the bank can open your account. For an adult personal account, cdbbank asks for:

  • ID card
  • Proof of permanent address from the last three months
  • Proof of income, such as a payslip or social insurance statement

For an account opened for someone under 18, the bank asks for the child’s birth certificate and ID, plus the legal guardian’s ID and proof of address.

A Client Relationship Officer handles the account-opening process and can ask for additional documents if needed. There is no in-app onboarding or fully self-service opening process. Access to cdbbank eBanking also requires separate registration, so online banking is arranged as part of your setup with the bank.
