Compare Offshore Accounts

If you live outside Cyprus, not every bank will be open to your application. Some do work with non-residents and international customers more readily than others, and the fees, paperwork, and account options vary a lot. A little comparison upfront can save you from applying to banks that were never likely to accept you in the first place.

We’ve brought the main Cyprus offshore account options together so you can see which banks are open to international customers, what they offer, what they charge, and what you may need to provide before you apply.

Basics

What Is an Offshore Account?

An offshore account is an account you have in a country where you do not live. If you live in France and open an account with a Cyprus bank, that account is offshore to you. For someone living in Cyprus, the same account is a local account.

In Cyprus, that could be a current account, foreign-currency account, payment account, or savings account. “Offshore” describes where the account is held in relation to you, not a special type of banking product.

You will still need to complete the bank’s normal identity, tax-residency, and compliance checks. Cyprus also participates in the Common Reporting Standard, so account information may be reported to the relevant tax authorities where the rules require it.

Applications

What Can Affect an Offshore Account Application in Cyprus?

An offshore account application in Cyprus can be affected by where you live and pay tax, your connection to Cyprus, where your money comes from, and how you plan to use the account. Banks use that information to decide whether they can accept your application and what checks they need to carry out.

Your Location

Banks will look at your nationality, country of residence, and tax residence. Some countries and customer profiles can have additional checks or tighter requirements.

Your Connection to Cyprus

Banks can take your connection to Cyprus into account. Owning property, having family here, doing business in the country or making regular local payments can all be relevant to the application.

Your Money

Expect questions about your income, source of funds and, where relevant, source of wealth. For companies, that also means explaining what the business does and who owns it.

Your Transactions

The bank will want an idea of how much money will move through the account, how often you expect to use it, and which countries payments will come from or go to. More complex activity can mean more checks before approval.

How to compare

How to Compare Cyprus Offshore Bank Accounts

When comparing offshore bank accounts in Cyprus, the maintenance fee is only one part of the cost. Eligibility, currencies, transfer charges, remote access, and deposit protection can make two similar-looking accounts very different in practice.

Offshore Account Eligibility

Start with the accounts you can open. Banks can apply different rules based on residence, tax status, nationality, occupation, business activity, source of funds, and the countries connected to your payments.

For non-residents, the application process can also involve certified documents, translations, additional compliance checks, or a branch visit. Include those requirements when comparing the options, not just the account features.

Multi-Currency Accounts

If you expect to receive, hold, or send more than one currency, compare how each account handles it. Some banks support several currencies under one relationship, while others use separate accounts with their own fees.

The cost of receiving money, converting it, and sending it on are important. Exchange rates, transfer charges, and correspondent-bank fees can also add to the total cost more than the account fee itself.

Offshore Account Fees

Compare the full cost of keeping and using the account over a year. Depending on the bank, that can include:

  • Account maintenance
  • Customer-review fees
  • Debit cards
  • Online and SWIFT transfers
  • Incoming payments
  • Cash transactions
  • Currency conversion
  • Inactivity charges

One-off opening, certification, translation and courier costs should be kept separate so you can see what the account costs to open and what it costs to keep.

Remote Banking

For an account you will manage from abroad, online access is an important factor. Compare what you can do without having to travel to Cyprus.

That includes transfers, beneficiary changes, card replacement, account limits, statements, compliance requests and account closure. Some banks handle most of this remotely, while others require branch involvement.

Deposit Protection

Eligible deposits at participating Cyprus credit institutions are protected up to €100,000 per depositor, per bank. The limit applies across eligible accounts held with the same institution, not separately to each account or currency.

Digital providers can work differently. Wise safeguards eligible customer funds rather than covering them under the Cyprus deposit-guarantee scheme, while eligible deposits with Revolut Bank are protected through Lithuania’s deposit-insurance system.

When comparing, check the legal entity behind the exact product and which protection or safeguarding arrangement applies.

What Documents Do You Need to Open an Offshore Account in Cyprus?

To open an offshore account in Cyprus, you will need ID or a passport, proof of address, tax details and documents that show where your money comes from. The full list, of course, differs from bank to bank, and can depend on your profile and how you plan to use the account.

You may be asked for:

  • A valid passport or national ID
  • Recent proof of address
  • Tax-residency details and tax-identification numbers
  • Employment or business information
  • Proof of income
  • Recent bank statements
  • A bank reference
  • Source-of-funds documents
  • Source-of-wealth documents
  • Expected balances and transaction values
  • Details of the currencies and countries involved in payments
  • Documents showing your connection to Cyprus, where relevant
  • Company ownership and business documents, if the account is for a company

Some banks will ask for certified, apostilled, or translated copies, which you will need more time for.

Another thing worth considering is that the paperwork can continue after you open the account. Banks can ask you for information updates or to provide documents for unusual or high-value transactions.

Providers

Cyprus Bank, Digital Provider or Both?

If you need an offshore account in Cyprus, you can use a local bank, a digital provider, or both. The right choice for you depends on how much of your banking is tied to Cyprus and how much happens across borders.

Cyprus Bank

A local bank is a good option when it comes to branch access, cash, cheques, property-related payments, and other services tied to Cyprus. It can also give you access to lending, deposits and other banking products under the same provider.

Digital Provider

Digital providers are a good choice for managing several currencies, sending money abroad, and handling payments through an app. They can also work well for travel, online spending or as a simple second account when you do not need cash or branch services.

Using Both

You can also keep a Cyprus account for local payments and use a digital provider for selected currencies, transfers, or card spending. This can keep local banking separate from the things you handle internationally.

Just keep an eye on the extra fees and admin that come with maintaining two accounts.
