Wise is an online account centred on international payments and currency exchange. Personal accounts have no monthly subscription, and Wise shows the exchange rate and its fee separately before you send or convert money.
You can hold and spend in multiple currencies, receive payments from abroad, and use the Wise card in Cyprus or while travelling. The account is online-only, and Wise operates as a payment institution rather than a bank.
Wise features:
Personal & Business accounts
International transfers
Multi-currency balances
EUR account details
Physical & digital cards
Optional Wise Interest
Overview
Holding a Wise Account in Cyprus
A Wise account in Cyprus works as an online payment account rather than a bank account. Cyprus customers use Wise Europe SA, and money held in Wise balance is safeguarded separately from Wise’s own funds.
Wise calls money that stays in your uninvested balance Cash. That simply means the money remains available in Wise rather than being invested through Wise Interest. Your EUR details come with a Belgian IBAN, and you can still use them for SEPA payments, receive salary or other transfers, and move euros between Wise and Cyprus bank accounts.
You can hold 40+ currencies and convert between them when needed. You can also withdraw physical cash with the Wise card, but Wise does not accept cash or cheque deposits.
Eligible EEA customers can receive monthly cashback on EUR, GBP and USD held as Cash. Wise Interest is separate and invests selected EUR or USD balances in a money-market fund instead.
Wise gives you several ways to pay, get paid, and manage currencies. Some are available on both Personal and Business accounts; others are built for businesses. The exact options you see can also depend on verification and your account status.
Sending Money
With Wise, you know the price of the transfer before sending. Enter the amount, currency, and recipient, and Wise shows the exchange rate, its fee, what should arrive, and the estimated delivery time before you confirm.
Transfer options include:
Bank account transfers
Transfers to Wise users
One-off scheduled transfers
Recurring transfers
Payments from your Wise balance
External payment methods where available
Large-transfer discounts
Transfers between Wise users in the same currency are free. When a conversion is needed, Wise uses the mid-market rate and shows the fee separately.
Receiving and Requesting Money
You can receive money into Wise by bank transfer or directly from another Wise user. For a bank transfer, you share the account details shown in Wise. If the sender also uses Wise, they can pay you through your email address, phone number, Wisetag, payment link, or QR code.
Receiving options include:
Bank transfers into Wise
Payments from other Wise users
Payment requests
Shareable payment links
Wisetag links and QR codes
Payments through your email address or phone number
Wise gives you different bank details for different currencies, so use the details shown for the payment you are expecting. EUR transfers from European banks are free to receive, while SWIFT payments can come with Wise or correspondent-bank fees.
You can also make yourself discoverable to other Wise users, which lets them find you without asking for your bank details each time.
Wise Card and Cash Withdrawals
You can use the Wise card for online purchases, everyday spending and ATM withdrawals in Cyprus and abroad. Wise has both physical and digital cards, and eligible cards can be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Card features include:
Physical and digital cards
Online and in-store payments
Apple Pay and Google Pay
ATM cash withdrawals
Automatic currency conversion
Card freezing
Spending limits
If you already have enough money in the currency you are spending, Wise takes the payment from that balance. If not, it converts money from one of your other balances automatically.
Holding, Converting and Putting Money Aside
You can keep 40+ currencies in your Wise account and convert between them when you need to. You can exchange money manually at the current rate or set a target rate and have the conversion happen automatically if that rate is reached.
Currency tools include:
Balances in 40+ currencies
Manual currency conversion
Auto Conversions at a target rate
Jars for setting money aside
Transfers from Jars
Scheduled transfers from Jars
Wise also has Jars, where you can separate money from your main balance for things like bills, travel, or another planned expense.
Direct Debits and Regular Payments
You can use Wise for bills, subscriptions, and other payments that repeat. You authorise a provider such as a utility company or gym to collect a Direct Debit, or you schedule payments yourself for things like rent or regular transfers to another person.
Regular-payment options include:
Direct Debits for bills and subscriptions
One-off scheduled transfers
Recurring transfers
Scheduled transfers between Wise balances
Scheduled transfers from Jars
Recurring card payments
You can view and cancel Direct Debits in Wise. The app also groups recurring card charges, so you can see which merchants charge you regularly and block future payments when needed.
For scheduled transfers, you choose the recipient, amount, and date, and decide whether the payment should repeat. Wise sends it on the date you set and shows you the estimated arrival time.
Business Invoices and Customer Payments
Wise Business has invoicing and payment-request tools for collecting money from customers. You can create an invoice inside Wise, add the customer, items, and tax, send it by email, and track its status afterwards. Customers do not need their own Wise account to pay a Wise invoice.
Payment options include:
Invoices
One-off payment requests
Reusable payment links
QR codes
Bank transfer payments
Payments from other Wise users
Invoice status tracking
For a fixed payment, you can send a request with the amount and currency already entered. A reusable link leaves the amount open for the customer to enter, and you can turn a payment link into a QR code for someone to scan.
Business Payouts and Team Controls
If you regularly pay contractors, suppliers, or employees, Wise Business can process up to 1,000 transfers from one spreadsheet instead of making each payment separately. You upload the batch on the Wise website, review the transfers, and fund them together.
Business controls include:
Batch payments of up to 1,000 transfers
Team access with individual permissions
One- or two-person payment approvals
Approval rules above a chosen amount
Access to selected groups and Jars
Downloadable statements and accounting data
Accounting integrations
Wise API
You decide which team members can prepare payments, approve them, and see company money or transactions. You can require approval for every payment or only above a certain amount, and the person who creates a payment cannot approve it themselves.
For larger payment workflows, Wise also connects with accounting software and has an API for automating transfers, tracking payments, and pulling statements into other systems.
Wise Interest
Wise Interest is an investment option for Personal and Business customers in Cyprus. You can turn it on for EUR or USD, and Wise invests that money in JPMorgan money market funds that hold short-term government-backed assets. Cyprus customers currently get Interest, but not Wise Stocks.
Interest features include:
EUR and USD investment options
Personal and Business availability
Returns added on working days
Spending and transfers from invested balances
Wise service fee
Fund-manager fee
You do not have to move the money back to cash before using it. Wise sells enough fund units when you spend, send, or withdraw. Most access is immediate, although larger transfers can take up to two working days.
Charges
Wise Cyprus Charges
Wise Personal has no monthly subscription. You pay when you use certain services, including currency conversion, some transfers, a physical card, ATM withdrawals above the monthly allowance, and certain international incoming payments. Wise Interest also charges an ongoing annual fee.
Wise prices transfers individually rather than using one flat transfer fee. If currency conversion is involved, it shows the exchange rate and its fee separately before you confirm. A same-currency payment, an international transfer and an ATM withdrawal can therefore have very different costs even when the amount is similar.

Pros & cons
Wise Cyprus Pros and Cons
Wise puts international transfers, currency conversion, and card spending in one online account. The practical limits are elsewhere: no cash deposits, no joint personal accounts, no borrowing, and no branch network in Cyprus.
Pros
Individuals and businesses in Cyprus can apply online.
You can hold 40+ currencies, and Wise shows the conversion fee separately from the exchange rate.
The Wise card is available in Cyprus, including digital cards, with Apple Pay and Google Pay on eligible devices.
You can schedule one-off or recurring transfers for things like rent or regular payments to another account.
You can freeze the Wise card without freezing the whole account, so incoming payments and transfers can continue.
EUR Direct Debits can cover regular euro bills and subscriptions.
Wise Business includes invoices, payment links, batch payments and team approvals.
Cons
Wise does not accept physical cash or cheque deposits.
Personal Wise accounts cannot be opened jointly. Group spending is available, but one person still owns the account.
Wise does not offer overdrafts, loans or credit cards. Its own card is a debit card.
Some international payments use SWIFT, which can take longer and may include intermediary-bank fees.
Wise has no customer branches in Cyprus. Verification issues, disputes and account problems are handled online or by phone.
Wise Interest invests your money in a money-market fund, so the return can change and the value can fall.
EUR account details use a Belgian IBAN rather than a Cyprus CY IBAN, although the account still works for SEPA payments.
Accounts
Wise Personal Account Cyprus
A Wise Personal account is for your own payments, spending and transfers. You apply online, complete the identity checks, and can then hold 40+ currencies, use Wise online or through the app, and get account details for receiving money where available.
You can receive money from abroad, spend in different currencies, and convert between balances inside Wise. Money held in the account is a payment balance rather than a bank deposit.
Wise Business is for companies, sole traders and other eligible businesses that send or receive money through Wise. Along with the regular currency and transfer tools, it adds business cards, invoices, payment links, team permissions, batch payments, and accounting features.
Wise checks the business, its activity, and the people who own or control it before opening the account. There is no monthly subscription in Cyprus, but transfers and currency conversion can still carry fees. Wise does not currently provide business overdrafts or loans in Cyprus.
You can have your salary paid directly into Wise in Cyprus. Give your employer the account details shown for the currency you want to receive, just as you would for a bank transfer. The employer does not need a Wise account.
For a salary paid in euros, you normally share your name and EUR IBAN. Wise uses Belgian details for EUR accounts, and regular euro transfers from European banks are free to receive. They usually arrive within a few minutes, although Wise says they can take up to one working day.
Once the salary arrives, you can leave it in EUR, convert part of it to another currency, or send money to another account. If payroll asks for confirmation that the details belong to you, Wise also provides a Proof of Account Ownership document.
Wise has no customer branches in Cyprus, so support runs through the app, website, and phone. If you sign in before contacting support, Wise can see the account and transaction involved and show the contact options for that issue.
Phone support is available 24/7. If support does not resolve the problem, you can submit a formal complaint. Wise says it aims to acknowledge complaints within one working day and give a final response within 15 calendar days, although more complex cases can take longer.
