Banks

Société Générale Bank Cyprus

You can use Société Générale Bank Cyprus for a current account and day-to-day payments, but there’s more here if you run a business or bank across borders. Companies can arrange foreign exchange, trade finance and funding for larger projects, while non-residents have a dedicated International Desk. For personal banking, you can also choose from savings accounts, deposits, Visa cards and loans.

Bank features

  • SGBCy app and web banking
  • Euro and foreign-currency accounts
  • International Desk for non-residents
  • Trade finance and foreign exchange

About Société Générale Bank in Cyprus

Société Générale Bank has been in Cyprus since 1985. It focused on international banking at first, then began taking on local customers in 2002. Today, personal customers and small enterprises share one banking team, while larger companies and international customers have another. If you run a small business, the first team handles your account and borrowing; the second works on larger financing and overseas trade.

Société Générale Bank Cyprus also publishes the correspondent banks it uses for payments in currencies including US dollars, pounds and Swiss francs. If you make regular transfers abroad, you can check which bank is listed for the currency you use.

For everyday banking, you can check your accounts and make transfers through the app or website. When you need to visit, there are branches in Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol. That takes more planning if you live elsewhere, and you’ll need to contact the bank to open an account rather than do it all through the app.

Products and services

Société Générale Bank Cyprus Products and Services

SGBCy has the usual personal banking products, but a much bigger part of its offering is for businesses and international customers. Alongside accounts, deposits, cards and personal lending, the bank provides working-capital finance, project funding, trade services and foreign exchange.

Accounts and Deposits

SGBCy has current and savings accounts for adults, along with separate products for children and teenagers. If you are saving for longer, you can also choose between fixed deposits and notice accounts, depending on when you expect to need the money.

The Current Account is available in euros, US dollars, and other supported currencies. The Saving Account is available in EUR, USD, and GBP and allows deposits and withdrawals without a fixed term.

Available options include:

  • Individual Current Account
  • Business Current Account
  • Saving Account
  • Fixed Deposit Account
  • Time Deposit Account
  • Notice Account
  • EuroKid Saving Account
  • EuroTeen package

Fixed and time deposits run for a set period. With a Notice Account, you can take money out earlier, but you need to notify the bank first. Children and teenagers have their own products through EuroKid and EuroTeen.

Business and Corporate Banking

Société Générale Bank Cyprus works with small enterprises, medium and large companies, and businesses with international activity. You can use the bank for company accounts, payroll and supplier payments, then add borrowing, foreign exchange or trade services as the business grows or starts dealing with more complex transactions.

If your company sends a lot of payments, you can upload beneficiaries and payment files in bulk instead of entering them one by one.

Business services include:

  • Business Current Account
  • Business debit and credit cards
  • Payroll and bulk payments
  • Overdrafts
  • Working-capital finance
  • Receivables and inventory finance
  • Business and project loans
  • Foreign exchange
  • Letters of credit
  • Letters of guarantee
  • Documentary collections
  • Import and export finance

Borrowing is subject to approval. The rate, repayment period, and any security SGBCy requires will depend on your company and the purpose of the borrowing.

Cards

SGBCy has Visa debit, credit and charge cards for personal customers, plus separate debit and credit cards for businesses.

Available cards include:

  • Visa Platinum Debit
  • Visa Business Debit
  • Visa Gold Credit
  • Visa Business Credit
  • Visa Gold Charge

Debit-card withdrawals are free at SGBCy ATMs. Using another bank’s ATM costs €1 in Cyprus and €3 abroad, while card transactions in currencies other than euros or Swedish kronor carry a 3% conversion fee.

Loans and Financing

For personal borrowing, you can apply for an overdraft, personal loan or mortgage. Businesses can borrow for shorter-term cash needs, stock and unpaid invoices, as well as larger investments and projects. Société Générale Bank Cyprus also participates in arrangements where a major loan is shared with other lenders.

Available finance includes:

  • Personal loans
  • Individual overdrafts
  • Mortgage loans
  • Business overdrafts
  • Working-capital facilities
  • Receivables finance
  • Inventory finance
  • Business loans
  • Project finance
  • Loan syndication
  • Co-financing

SGBCy does not publish one standard rate for every loan, and the final cost can also include arrangement and documentation fees. Ask for the full cost and repayment schedule when comparing an offer.

Digital Banking and Payments

SGBCy Digital Banking is available through both the website and mobile app, so you can check your accounts, make payments, and manage transfers online. It supports both euro payments and international transfers.

Corporate customers can upload beneficiaries and payments in bulk instead of adding every transaction manually.

Through digital banking, you can:

  • Check accounts and transactions
  • Download transaction history
  • Transfer money between your accounts
  • Send SEPA and SEPA Instant payments
  • Make SWIFT transfers
  • Add beneficiaries
  • Track transfer details
  • Order a chequebook
  • Arrange cash for collection at a branch
  • Book an appointment with an account manager
  • Upload bulk beneficiaries and payments as a corporate customer

The digital-banking subscription is free, and an online payment generally costs less than arranging the same transaction manually.

Trade Finance and Foreign Exchange

If your company buys or sells abroad, Société Générale Bank can handle the payments, guarantees, and trade documents that go with those transactions.

Letters of credit and documentary collections can be used to control when payment is made, while guarantees give the other party extra protection if an obligation is not met. You can also arrange import or export finance and exchange one currency for another.

Available services include:

  • Import and export letters of credit
  • Documentary collections
  • Direct collections
  • Letters of guarantee
  • Import finance
  • Export finance
  • Bill discounting
  • Documentary-credit confirmation
  • Foreign-exchange transactions
  • Forward-exchange contracts

The cost depends on the transaction. You may pay handling, payment, amendment, and SWIFT fees, along with percentage-based commissions.

Safe Deposit Boxes and Branch Services

Société Générale Bank Cyprus branches are for cash and cheque transactions, account requests, and safe deposit boxes. Safe deposit boxes come in three sizes. Your annual rental includes two visits, and you pay separately after that.

Available branch services include:

  • Small safe deposit boxes
  • Medium safe deposit boxes
  • Large safe deposit boxes
  • Cash deposits and withdrawals
  • Cheque deposits
  • Utility-bill payments
  • In-person account requests

Safe deposit box rent starts from €125 plus VAT per year. The first two visits each year are included, with additional visits charged at €15 plus VAT.

Pros and cons

Société Générale Bank Cyprus Pros and Cons

With Société Générale Bank, you can do all your routine banking online, but you still need to talk to the bank for some basic functions. You need to contact it to open an account or get current rates for some products. That contact is expected for complicated business requests but might be less welcome if you’re looking at Cyprus banks for a simple, personal account.

Pros

  • SGBCy has a dedicated International Desk for non-resident customers.
  • Personal and business customers can use both web and mobile banking, with biometric login available in the app.
  • Digital Banking supports internal, SEPA, instant and international payments.
  • Business customers can upload bulk beneficiaries and payment files, run payroll and set different user limits.
  • Business services include working-capital finance, project finance and trade finance.
  • Digital Banking has no subscription fee, and online payments cost less than the same transactions handled manually.

Cons

  • SGBCy has only three branches, in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca.
  • SGBCy cards are not currently supported by Apple Pay or Google Wallet in Cyprus.
  • Current savings and deposit rates are not clearly published on the product pages.
  • Setting up Digital Banking still requires credentials and activation from the bank.
  • SGBCy has a much wider business and international range than personal banking, so there is less here if you only need a basic everyday account.
  • Some loan and deposit pricing is only confirmed after you contact the bank.

Société Générale Bank Cyprus Current Account

The SGBCy Current Account gives you one place to handle salary payments, bills, transfers and cash withdrawals, with Digital Banking for checking and managing the account online. You can keep it in euros, US dollars and other supported currencies.

Sogeplus Automatic Saving

Sogeplus is SGBCy’s automatic saving service. You choose how much money you want to keep in your main account, and when the balance goes above that amount, a set amount is transferred to a linked savings account.

You can link Sogeplus to a regular Savings Account, Notice Account, or EuroKid account. If there is not enough money above the balance you set, the transfer does not go through and there is no charge for skipping it.

Customer Support at Société Générale Bank Cyprus

SGBCy lets you book an appointment with your account manager through Digital Banking, which gives you a direct contact at the bank when you need something that is not available in the app.

For account questions, there is also SOGEINFO at 8000 7777. You can use it to get information about your accounts by phone, and the same number connects you with SGBCy’s Customer Service Unit if you need help or want to raise an issue.

If you need something that still has to be handled in person, such as cash or cheque transactions or access to a safe deposit box, you will need one of the branches in Nicosia, Larnaca or Limassol.

If you bank with SGBCy from abroad, you can contact the International Desk directly when you need help with your account or other Cyprus banking matters.
