How to open a bank account in Cyprus

Documents, residency checks and what to expect from remote versus branch opening.

Opening a personal current account in Cyprus usually means proving who you are, where you live and, in many cases, where your money comes from. Requirements are set by each provider, so the practical experience differs from bank to bank.

  • Identity and address

Expect to provide a valid passport or national ID and a recent document showing your address. Some providers also ask for a local tax or social-insurance reference.

  • Source of funds

Banks are required to understand where incoming money comes from. Payslips, an employment contract, pension statements or business documents are commonly requested.

  • Remote versus branch

Some accounts can be opened fully online, others need a branch visit or a video call to complete identity checks. Where a provider publishes this, the product page states which applies.

  • Timing

Straightforward applications can be quick, while cases needing extra documents take longer. Approval is always the provider's decision.
